Oppo Find X5: The design technique and tech compromises of a premium smartphone – Technology

In anticipation of Mobile World Congress, Oppo has unveiled its new family of high-end smartphones, the Find X5 Pro, which presents itself as an evolution not only technological, but as a design of the previous family Find X3. The new smartphones follow the same aesthetic philosophy, with a premium design inheriting the characteristic DNA of the Find X range.

The manufacturer has used materials such as ceramic, in black and white, to mold the entire body of the Find X5 in one piece, with no seams. SAPO TEK had the opportunity to participate in a virtual round table with the international press and to learn a little more about the manufacturer’s decisions, whether it be the design or the technology behind the cameras. Seeking to explain its design a bit more, Oppo told SAPO TEK that the body was aged at 1,000°C for 168 hours, as shown in the presentation.

But to get the current design, the manufacturer says the process had already started on the Find X3, and is being refined. They opted for ceramic materials, instead of others like glass, as it is not the best to create the back. First because of its light reflections, but also because it was more difficult to mold the curved shapes present in the new model. “We decided to invest more time in improving materials and molding techniques, and we did a lot of experimentation.” It was really a challenge for the company, the use of ceramic powder as a base material.

Next, the machines had to be adjusted in several stages to achieve the desired curved shape. It was necessary to reach 1000º of temperature to be able to forge the design as I wanted. The company has once again highlighted the unique piece where the photo module is integrated.

This process, in addition to the challenge imposed, required double the time and investment made in this design. However, the company seems happy with the result, as the ceramic body reduces light reflections, in addition to giving the device a more premium look. And of course, the guarantee that the material is twice as resistant as glass, especially to falls. On the other hand, the heat dissipation of the equipment thanks to the material is also important, allowing a better overall performance of the smartphone. Its robustness has been reinforced with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus technology, promising to resist scratches up to 1,200 HV.

But the design chosen gave rise to some technological concessions. The reason for the stagnation of 2X telephoto sensors has been asked, when two years ago the Find X2 Pro model had a 5X. The manufacturer has clarified that the priority is to offer the maximum quality of its main camera, now supported by the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) MariSilicon X. However, due to the design of the smartphone, Oppo admits that it does not there was not enough space to place secondary lenses with more capacity. There was therefore a compromise, with priority on the image quality of the main camera, that on the secondary objectives, in this case the zoom.

About its technology MariSilicon X was introduced to process data captured by Sony IMX 766 50 MP sensor. The company points out that the MariSilicon X stands out for its ability to record 4K video at night in HDR quality.

He also talked about the Marisilicon X’s multi-frame RAW capabilities, able to combine multiple images, in this case five RAW images in Pro mode, from different exposures to compose the image. In this way, the brand guarantees image noise reduction and offers RAWs with different exposures and HDR capabilities.

The Find X5 has two 50MP sensors, one of which is ultra-wide-angle with a 110-degree field of view, and the other lens is wide-angle. It has a third telephoto lens of 13 MP, with a shutter aperture of f/2.4. The camera module is described as “huge” inside the body of the smartphone as it also houses a five-axis OIS image stabilizer. It has three degrees of shake compensation. The manufacturer also states that its lenses improve colors and compensate for chromatic imperfections by up to 77%.

As for the selfie camera, the sensor is 32 MP, also powered by the MariSilicon X. It has features that help the user improve the image, ideal for those who record vlogs, for example. The camera has an artificial intelligence that detects when the user reads something on the screen and keeps the image. It even guarantees 60% more light than previous models, more textures and details too.

To power the smartphone, inside is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, aided by the Adreno 730 GPU. The equipment has a graphene-produced cooling system, capable of distributing heat over the entire surface . It is further aided by the vapor chamber, which also cools the battery. It’s also powered by a 5,000mAh battery, aided by a smart health-monitoring engine. The company promises 1,600 charge cycles, which is twice the battery life compared to previous ones.

Accompanying the smartphone, the 80 W SuperVOOC technology promises to restore 50% autonomy in 12 minutes. It also has a 50W AirVOOC fast charge capable of recharging the battery to 100% in 50 minutes. It is compatible with other wireless fast charging systems. The new Oppo Find X5 Pro 5G has 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. It has IP68 certification and a fingerprint reader under the screen.
