The City Hall of Fortaleza, through the Municipal Health Service (SMS), launched this Monday 28, an educational action in the Jardim das Oliveiras neighborhood, which aims to promote among the inhabitants the fight against Aedes aegypti. The measure aims to prevent epidemics of dengue, zika and, mainly, chikungunya in the region.
The health watch coordinator, Nélio Morais, spoke about the work carried out by the endemic agents of the SMS and underlined that the campaign is taking place in a region identified as vulnerable, conducive to the proliferation of mosquitoes and diseases such as chikungunya, dengue and zika.
“The SMS has adopted a measure of concentration of efforts in the collective effort in the Jardim das Oliveiras neighborhood with 146 endemic agents carrying out voice control. Door to door entering these residences, identifying fire pits mostly in barrels in usable and unusable depots, small depots, buckets between them, disposable cups, water tanks and pool motors,” detailed Nélio.

According to the health surveillance coordinator, the neighborhood is experiencing a truly worrying scenario. The performance of the endemic agents was fundamental so that, within four days, there was the possibility of 30,000 properties in this area of the city being served.
Aedes aegypti infestation rate
Although the notifications are considered weak, Nélio Morais warns of two fundamental aspects that get a lot of attention. The first is the Rapid Sampling Index Survey for Aedes aegypti (LIRAa), data from Fortaleza indicate an infestation rate of 2.5%.
“It is an index that really worries, it is an index of threat, of risks, of possibilities of setting up an epidemic process if concrete measures are not really adopted”, he explained.
The other worrying scenario mentioned is the identification of extremely vulnerable areas with the presence and reporting of sick people suspected of some of the diseases caused by the mosquito. With a higher concentration of chikungunya cases.
“It has a concentration intended for neighborhoods ranging from Luciano Cavalcante de regional II, Jardim das Oliveiras, Parque Manibura and Cidade dos Trabalhadores, with a greater concentration in Jardim das Oliveiras, where, out of 39 sick people, 20 have been identified with Chikungunya”.
Prevention and symptoms of diseases caused by Aedes aegypti
There is still no vaccine or medicine against the diseases caused by Aedes aegypti. Therefore, the only form of prevention is to eliminate the mosquito, always keeping the house clean, eliminating possible breeding sites.
It is also recommended to wear clothing that minimizes skin exposure during the day when mosquitoes are most active. Repellents and insecticides can be used, following label instructions. Mosquito nets provide good protection for those who sleep during the day (eg babies, bedridden people and night workers).
