Santarém Hospital celebrates 30 years of consultation in March.
The Diabetes Consultation of the Distrital Hospital of Santarém celebrates its 30 years of activity this month. To celebrate the date, several initiatives are planned that will take place during the month of March.
This consultation was born out of the need for systematic follow-up of the diabetic patient by a specialized and differentiated team in the region. Currently, 1,300 patients are regularly followed in the hospital.
In this area, assistance is mainly provided to type 1 and type 2 diabetics treated with insulin, with serious complications, in particular with damage to target organs, with ophthalmological, nephrological, cardiological and neurological complications.
It all started in March 1992, with a multidisciplinary team of nursing, internal medicine and nutrition, with the collaboration of ophthalmology, surgery, cardiology, urology and neurology. The activity expanded with the creation of a diabetes day hospital in 1999. A year later, the Diabetes Center was created and the Diabetes and Pregnancy Consultation was carried out. In 2011, the integration of a podiatrist made it possible to broaden skills and differentiate itself.
The Diabetes Center team is currently made up of six hospital assistants and two nurses dedicated to the area, two nutritionists and a podiatrist. Of the initial clinical staff, doctors Cristina Esteves, who is also the coordinator, and Cristina Santos and nutritionist Santo Amaro, remain in office.
