Sporting resumed this Thursday, on the way to victory, during the trip to Famalicense (2nd Division), by 2-5 (after extra time), in the match of the round of 16 of the Portuguese Cup.
After two defeats for the championship, the lions returned to winning ways in the Portuguese Cup, but their life was not made easier by the ferocious Famalicense. Sporting started the game with a goal on the first kick of the match, by Alessandro Verona. In the 14th minute, Gonzalo Romero, barely entering the game, extended the score to 2-0. Famalicense, after missing a direct free kick, reduced it to 23′.
In the second half, the northerners came in stronger and tied the game at 45′ on a converted direct free kick, for Sporting’s 10th foul. The lions still had a ball on the post with 5 seconds remaining in regulation time, but the game ended up going to overtime, where the law of the fittest prevailed. Matias Platero scored from a direct free kick, Toni Perez made it 4-2 on the next game and Alesandro Verona made it 5-2.
Sporting will now meet Benfica in the Portuguese Cup quarter-final on March 12.
