Vitamin D is considered a pro-hormone that affects all body functions, in addition to skeletal muscle and immunity. According to the owner of Farmácia Dalila, the Pharmaceutical Caroline Furlan, there are two forms of vitamin D, D2 and D3. Vitamins D2 and D3 are obtained through supplementation and diet. However, D3 is also formed by the cutaneous synthesis of UVB rays, ie by exposure to the sun. According to Caroline, about 20% of vitamin absorption is through supplements, the rest is through sun exposure, since exposure brings UVB rays to the skin which synthesizes vitamin D in the body.
It is important that the person gets the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., for about 20 minutes. Ideally, the person should leave their arms and legs exposed to the sun, protecting other parts to avoid burns. Also, it is recommended that the person does not use sunscreen for 20 minutes. According to the specialist, several studies associate the lack of vitamin D with many diseases, the main one being osteoporosis in the elderly. Additionally, many neurological problems can also be associated with a lack of the vitamin, such as depression and anxiety. The immune system can also be affected by vitamin D deficiency.
