HC Motor did not attend the match at Dragão Arena due to the war in Ukraine.
FC Porto have qualified for the third consecutive round of the Handball Champions League after the European Federation (EHF) awarded the Dragons victory over Ukraine’s HC Motor.
The EHF granted a 10-0 victory and the respective two points to FC Porto in the match with HC Motor, of the last round of Group B of the Champions League, canceled due to the impossibility of the presence of the Ukrainian team in Portugal.
FC Porto close the group with 11 points and, although they have not yet defined the final position, as there are three games left to play in the last round, they cannot be overtaken by the Romanians of Dinamo Bucharest, currently in seventh position, which has eight.
The EHF has decided that the three games to be played by HC Motor – against Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and FC Porto – are validated with 10-0 goals and two points for the opposing clubs.
This decision was taken after HC Motor informed the EHF that, given the current situation in Ukraine, which has been invaded by Russia, it is impossible for the club to play these matches.
It’s the third time in a row that the ‘Dragons’ have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League, having been knocked out in 2020/21 by the Danes of Aalborg, for scoring fewer away goals (32-29 in Porto and 27 -24 in Denmark).
In 2019/20, the blues and whites secured their presence in the “eighth”, stage in which they would face Aalborg, but this round was canceled and the competition qualified directly for the semi-finals, due to the pandemic. of covid-19.
