McDonald’s and Coca-Cola Boycott Threats Grow for Not Leaving Russia

Pressure on some of the Western food and drink giants to leave Russia, such as McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, has intensified, urged to leave Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine . #BoycottMcDonalds and #BoycottCocaCola were trending on Twitter this Monday as well as this weekend, respectively. The criticism comes amid calls for brands such as KFC, Pepsi, Starbucks and Burger King to close their stores and halt sales in Russia.

However, most companies have remained silent on the issue. Fast-food chain KFC passed the 1,000 restaurant mark in Russia last year, guaranteeing the opening of around 100 restaurants a year.

In information recently published on its website, McDonald’s revealed that it has 847 stores in Russia. The company also owns most of these outlets, whereas in the rest of the world most are normally operated by franchisees.

Ian Peters, director of the Institute for Business Ethics, assured in statements to Britain’s BBC News that “now is not the time to be on top of the world”. “The world will likely judge companies for what they do in such circumstances and ethical judgment will be as important as compliance with any government regulations and sanctions,” he stressed, acknowledging that most companies should have an “ethical compass” that they use to make important decisions.
