With the high temperatures in summer, the incidence of certain diseases is higher. Among them are kidney stones or kidney stones, which are hardened formations that form in the kidneys or urinary tract, resulting from the accumulation of existing crystals in the urine.

This Thursday (10), World Kidney Day, the Brazilian Society of Urology-RJ warns that during the hot months, cases of kidney stones increase by an average of 30%. There are more than 150,000 cases in Brazil per year.

In summer, dehydration increases, which can lead to health problems. The recommendation to avoid dehydration, in the case of an adult, is to consume an average of 2 liters per day, mainly water. “This measurement may vary depending on certain factors, such as age, weight, climatic and environmental conditions, the presence of any disease. The important thing is never to expect to be thirsty, as this can already be a sign of dehydration,” says nutritionist and Pró-Rim Foundation researcher Fabiana Baggio Nerbass.

How to stay hydrated?

Water remains the best source of hydration, but you can also vary your ways of hydrating yourself during the summer. It is advisable to consume coconut water, iced natural teas and juices, preferably without added sugar, in addition to fruits and vegetables, which have water in their composition. Another suggestion is flavored water, add your favorite herbs (mint, rosemary, lemon balm, etc.)

Fruits like cantaloupe and watermelon are almost 90% water. Vegetables are also high in water and minerals, making them great meal options to match this season.

Dehydration: danger sign

Thirst is the main symptom of dehydration, but it can also be noticed when the mouth is dry, skin is dry, eyes appear sunken, dizziness and nausea. “There is evidence that shows that the feeling of thirst is triggered later, when the body is already slightly dehydrated,” explains the nutritionist.

In case of dehydration, replacement in the body can be done with water, homemade whey, coconut water, isotonic drinks, soups, teas and juices. If symptoms do not improve, see a doctor.

“Don’t expect to be thirsty! The advice is to always have a bottle of water on you, both in summer and in cold weather,” warns the nutritionist.

Observe the color of your urine, it can give signs of hydration in your body. “Ideally, your urine should be very clear throughout the day,” explains the professional.
