A situation worries the inhabitants of Brumado, in Sertão Productivo, in the south-west of Bahia. Elderly people with symptoms of chikungunya have been diagnosed with viral encephalitis. According to Achei Sudoeste, at least four people, aged between 76 and 93, have been affected by the disease which attacks the central nervous system and causes inflammation in the brain.
The disease usually occurs more in children, especially newborns, but the problem can affect people of different ages.
Also according to the local website, among the elderly affected, who need follow-up in the intensive care unit (ICU), three of them were taken to private units in Vitória da Conquista and one patient in Salvador.
