Ajax beat Cambuur before the decisive reception at Benfica, by 3-2, but did not convince. The winning goal for the Amsterdam men came in injury time. A story, by the way, which had already happened in the previous round, during the victory obtained at the last minute against RKC Waalwijk.
However, in statements to De Telegraaf, the coach of the Dutch team, Erik Hag, assumed that the team had experienced a few moments of irregularity.
“We’ve been good at shooting ourselves in the foot over the past few weeks, delivering games that we’re in complete control of through individual error. We will have to work on this responsibility and demand more of each other. If the players don’t take individual responsibility, the games can change,” he said.
“We are exactly where we want to be, often with good football. (…) But after the break [frente ao Cambuur] we make incomprehensible mistakes. These moments can become a game. But we managed to turn the tide afterwards, so we can see that the team has character. That’s why I get on the bus with a positive feeling. We will have to correct a number of things, but the winning mentality of this team is clear.”
Now a decisive week is coming for Ajax, with the reception at Benfica and the classic against Feyenoord: “We are playing good football, but we have to last the 95 minutes. If we make these kinds of mistakes, we won’t get the result we need. But if we are at our level, we have a good chance.
Benfica, let’s remember, plays in Amsterdam next Tuesday, in the round of 16 second leg of the Champions League. The first leg was a two-ball draw.
