The White House is doing everything to repatriate Brittney Griner, detained with cannabis oil at an airport near Moscow
Brittney Griner, the American women’s basketball star, was arrested three weeks ago in Russia after being caught with cannabis oil at an airport near Moscow, but no one in her country is now able to contact her. The White House and the US State Department are doing everything to repatriate Brittney, but the truth is that no one has even managed to speak to the player. “I think it’s really unusual that we don’t have access to her through our embassy or consular services. The Russian penal system is different from ours, very opaque. We don’t know exactly where her case stands. C It’s three weeks in detention and it’s extremely disturbing,” US Congressman Colin Allred told ESPN. Concern is mounting as Russia is targeted by numerous sanctions, notably American, after the invasion of Ukraine, and as Americans fear that the Russians will use the athlete’s situation as a diplomatic asset against the United States.
The player was arrested on February 17, a week before the invasion of Ukraine. In Russia, such crimes can result in 10 years in prison if convicted.
Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury, but for six years now he has also played for a Russian team, UMMC Ekaterinburg, in the months when the WNBA has no games.
