In a major overhaul of its ThinkPad lineup, Lenovo has announced the next-generation Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 3 and ThinkPad L15 Gen 3, with the main new feature being the debut of the latest 12th Gen Intel Alder Lake processors, with a maximum configuration to include an Intel Core i7 processor.
And we’re talking about the vPro version of Intel processors, with added benefits for businesses and professionals, like the Intel Hardware Shield security platform. It’s a more expressive change than in the case of the AMD releases, which retain the AMD Ryzen Pro 5000 instead of the newer 6000, and it’s unclear why this generational “leap” wasn’t made. So there are fundamental differences between the two versions, with only options with Intel containing Thunderbolt 4 ports, while AMD gear will have to get away with USB-C 3.2, but at least one or the other of the options aligns with Bluetooth 5.2 and the option for 4G LTE.
As usual, the Intel and AMD versions will be easily distinguishable because the suffix I means equipment equipped with an Intel processor. There is no configuration with dedicated graphics, given that these are compact professional devices. On the other hand, up to 64 GB of RAM and 1 TB of internal storage offer excellent indications for heavy tasks.
A major internal change is that while the previous generation was limited to a battery, Lenovo today offers 42 Whr, 57 Whr options, and even an additional 63 Whr option, the latter exclusively for devices with Intel chips, allowing the user greater flexibility between autonomy and portability.
On the outside, the changes are visible, with the ThinkPad aesthetic retained, but the screens now displaying much more contained edges. In the case of the ThinkPad L14, we obviously have a 14-inch screen, or 15.6 in the L15 model, both with maximum FHD resolution, just like the cameras which significantly improve on previous generation HD units and, with Dolby Voice, there is clearly a significant leap in the quality of equipment for videoconferencing and hybrid work.
The Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 3i (Intel) will be available from May for an indicative price of $929, with the AMD version arriving first in April with a starting price of $869. Interestingly, the ThinkPad L15s arrive in the same time slots and for the same indicative prices.
