The municipality of Lloseta, in Mallorca, this week inaugurated the first renewable hydrogen plant in the Iberian Peninsula.
The “Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca” project is led by ACCIONA Energía and Enagás, with the participation of CEMEX and IDAE. This is part of Green Hysland, a project funded by the European Union and coordinated by Enagás, which supports the implementation of the infrastructure necessary to build a renewable hydrogen ecosystem on the island of Mallorca, and contributes to achieving the environmental objectives defined by the Government of the Balearic Islands.
The industrial production of renewable hydrogen on the facilities will take place as the infrastructures and consumption equipment are put in place. Once the green hydrogen ecosystem is in place, the goal will be to reduce the island’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 21,000 tonnes per year. Part of the green hydrogen will be transported by the first hydro-pipeline in Spain, which Redexis will build on the island, and which can be injected into the natural gas distribution network that the company has in Palma de Mallorca.
Green hydrogen will have multiple applications on the island of Mallorca, such as supplying clean fuel to bus fleets, producing heat and electricity for commercial and public buildings and creating a service station .
