United States: One-year-old baby receives heart transplant

One-year-old Easton Sinnamon was born with a congenital heart defect and required three surgeries. However, everything changed when he received a new heart. The surgery was performed at Duke University Hospital, in the city of Asheboro, North Carolina (USA). The information comes from the R7 portal.

The baby’s mother, Kaitlyn Sinnamon, said she discovered Easton’s heart condition during an ultrasound when she was 20 weeks old. And there was the aggravating factor that a heart valve was damaged. This type of condition is rare, affecting only 1% of newborns in the United States.

In addition to the heart transplant, Easton also received thymus tissue, which serves for the body’s defense and helps reduce the number of drugs used to prevent transplant rejection.

Pediatrician Joseph W. Turek said, “It was a big step in the right direction. I hope that one day in the near future we will no longer need to use such high doses of immunosuppression with this technique (thymic tissue).

After the operation, Easton was able to return home and eventually met his older sister, 4-year-old Ivy.
