Enrique Cerezo celebrated his 1,000th game as Atlético Madrid president with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, earning him a Champions League quarter-final qualification.
“I’ve been president of Atlético for 35 years, it’s almost half a lifetime. It was great to play the 1,000th game in Manchester and to qualify. We played the game that interested us and it went well”, he began by telling Radio Marca, before leaving a comment: “We did not beat Cristiano Ronaldo, we beat Manchester United.”
Praise of coach Diego Simeone: “I don’t think a coach has given the club as many trophies in ten years as he has. I think we’ve had a coach for much longer. What we can’t do is want him fired when he loses three games or stay forever when he wins three. We believe in him, he gives everything he has to the club and it’s a guarantee that he can stay here as long as he wants.
About João Félix: “Sometimes people are very impatient and everything has its time. He came to the club very young and needed a period of adaptation – and players have to adapt to a lot of circumstances. He is one of the great figures in European football at the moment and will become a superfigure in world football.”
Asked about the opponent he would like to face in the quarter-finals: “I would like all the Spanish teams to qualify. If we have to play the final, whether against a Spanish team, Real Madrid or Villarreal. We’ll see who touches us in the draw.
