At Gamescom 2022, we were introduced to Under The Waves, a melancholy adventure set in the depths of the seas that focuses on the theme of conserving the planet’s oceans.
Come and see what is happening under these waters…
During the opening ceremony of Gamescom 2022, the game developed by Parallel Studio and which will be distributed by Quantic Dream, Under The Waves, was unveiled.
The game, as its creators state, is a narrative-heavy, poetic adventure that leads players to uncover the secrets that lie beneath the waters and that works as a strong message about ocean preservation.
The game is set in the 1970s, in which players will follow the adventures of Stan, a professional diver who works for an oil company.
With the loneliness of the ocean for company, Stan begins to witness a series of various strange phenomena below the surface that put his own life in danger.
To survive, players will need to follow various manifestations of his memories, leading Stan to fight to free himself from them and return to the surface, or be forever trapped in the depths of the sea and his soul.
Players will pilot Stan's submarine through an underwater abyss and dive to explore caves, wrecks and aquatic plants while finding stories from the past, remains, collectibles and more. Along the way, Stan will also need to build tools and equipment to be able to advance further, and the game will also feature a tool creation and management component.
Under the Waves functions as a sort of love letter to the oceans of our world and issues several warnings about the importance of their conservation. In this sense, Parallel Studio and Quantic Dream have announced a partnership with Surfrider Foundation Europe, a non-profit organization responsible for the protection of links, rivers, oceans and coastal areas.
"It is the most personal and intense work ever developed by this studio, revealed Ronan Coiffe, CEO and Game Director of Parallel Studio. "We are an independent team of about ten members, and all the values and messages we bring to the game, we do them with intense passion. From the art used in the game, to the writing of the narrative, to the sound component, we've all had the opportunity to leave our personal mark on Under the Waves. We sincerely hope that everyone who plays Under the Waves has as much fun as we had producing it.”
Under The Waves will be released next year on PC, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
