O Zoom was planning to launch messaging and calendar apps, a report from The Information website revealed this week. According to the publication, the so-called “Zmail” and “Zcal” (names by which the services are referred to internally), would be officially announced in November 2022.
Initially a simple video call service, the platform recently changed logo and announced a greater focus on enterprise chats to compete with platforms such as Google Chat and Microsoft Teams.
The company does not seem satisfied and, it seems, wants to fight with the giants, also with its own mail and calendar services which would compete with Gmail and Outlook (mail services from Google and Microsoftrespectively) and Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar (the calendar services of the two giants).
The possibility of a messaging and calendaring service has everything to do with Zoom’s move towards enterprise customers, who currently already use the video call service to a large extent. These two possible additions to Enterprise Chat would create a robust package to deal with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office 365.
From anonymity to the summit
You may recall that Zoom had a meteoric rise in 2020, at the height of lockdown measures to contain the spread of Covid-19. Despite its recent notoriety, the company founded by engineer Eric Yuan has been active since 2011. If the next steps will really materialize and if the success will be similar to that known by Zoom from 2020, there is however that time to say.
